Open Gates

Welcome to enjoy our beautiful city!
The “Open Gates” invites guests to a pleasant gathering and visits to outstanding estates hidden behind closed gates on June 14-15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in Kristiinankaupunki. Come and enjoy the floral beauty of June in the welcoming Cittaslow town.
Garden splendor
During this weekend, people open up their gardens to visitors. Everyone gets the chance to slip through the gates and explore different types of gardens.
The diversity is great, with modern gardens, Japanese-influenced gardens, wild gardens, and estates with plants whose seeds have accidentally been brought here from the Mediterranean as ballast during the shipping era. In recent years, about 35–50 estates have participated.
Visitors are also offered various programs for both children and adults, including music and theater, exhibitions, yard sales and cafés, lectures on garden care, and more.

A historic wooden
town idyll
Kristiinankaupunki offers authentic experiences for you and your family. Did you know that Kristiinankaupunki is one of Finland's best-preserved wooden towns and the only city that has burned down?! The old town area has streets lined with colorful wooden houses from the 1700s and 1800s – it's like a time capsule of coastal life.

A vibrant city in a coastal setting
Already in the 1600s and 1700s, Kristiinankaupunki was an important port town. Ships were built here, and goods such as tar, wood, and fish were exported to much of Europe. Many houses in the old town were built by ship captains and merchants.
